HARRISBURG – State Rep. Mark Gillen (R-Berks/Lancaster) and his colleagues in the state Legislature voted for a new state law that was recently signed by the governor and will help Pennsylvanians avoid calls from telemarketers.
“I’ve heard from a variety of people in our district that telemarketing calls are becoming more bothersome as well as aggressive,” Gillen said. “This new law is an enhanced tool to empower Pennsylvanians to protect themselves against unwanted telemarketing calls.”
Under the new law –
Act 73 (formerly House Bill 318) – Pennsylvanians no longer will have to renew their phone number’s registration on the state’s Do Not Call list. Residents previously had to renew their registration on the list every five years. The new law enables Pennsylvanians to permanently register their phone numbers.
The law also prohibits telemarketing calls on legal holidays.
“People should be able to enjoy Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day and other holidays without annoying calls from telemarketers,” Gillen said.
The law also requires computerized auto-dialers, better known as robocalls, to provide residents with a way to opt out at the beginning of the call.
The new state law also enables businesses to register their phone numbers on the state’s Do Not Call list.
For more information or to register their phone numbers on the state’s Do Not Call list, Gillen encourages residents to visit the
Office of Attorney General’s website.
The new law will take effect during the first week of December.
