Landmark legislation that represents a big win for Pennsylvania National Guard members and their families was signed into law Monday in Harrisburg. The new law offers a free college education for a Pennsylvania National Guard member as well as their spouse and children in exchange for a a six-year reenlistment. The benefit can be used to attend any Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education school free or for partial tuition benefits at other institutions of higher learning approved by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Rep. Mark Gillen (R-Berks, Lancaster) said he feels this will be a well deserved reward for those who have a close family member serving with the PA Guard.

A comprehensive package of bills that will help support Pennsylvania farmers and grow the state’s top industry was signed into law today by the governor. Additionally, a $19.5 million increase in funding for ag-related programs was included in the state budget adopted by the General Assembly last week.

Legislation designed to ensure that families and friends have access to the final resting places of their loved ones has been approved by the House State Government Committee. Rep. Mark Gillen (R-Berks, Lancaster) said he introduced House Bill 1019 in response to a dispute in which a privately owned cemetery was marked with no trespassing signs, denying access to those who wish to visit the gravesites of their families. Gillen said his bill would make sure all parties are treated with dignity and compassion.

The 101st Annual Pennsylvania Farm Show is ongoing this week in Harrisburg with record crowds expected to be on hand to view the largest agricultural exposition on the east coast. The event showcases Pennsylvania’s largest production industry – agriculture, and offers hundreds of farmers and others involved in agriculture an opportunity to exhibit their products and compete for prizes. Rep. Mark Gillen (R-Berks & Lancaster) attended this year’s week long show to speak with and visit people from his legislative district involved in exhibits and competitions.
