Gillen Votes for State Budget Approved by House
6/27/2015
HARRISBURG – Rep. Mark Gillen (R-Berks/Lancaster) today in Harrisburg voted in favor of a balanced, on-time state budget bill that would fund the core functions of government without raising taxes.

“I’m working with my colleagues in the House and Senate to put a fiscally responsible, comprehensive and balanced budget on the governor’s desk before the deadline,” said Gillen. “I hope the governor will sign the budget into law so that Pennsylvania can avoid the long, drawn-out budget stalemates that have plagued the federal government in recent years.”

The House-approved budget bill would allocate $30 billion to fund state government programs and services.

The spending plan includes a $100 million increase in state support for school districts in Pennsylvania and a $30 million funding increase for pre-kindergarten programs.

It also would provide funding increases for public colleges and universities in Pennsylvania.

Legislators are working to enact a state budget before the new fiscal year begins on Wednesday, July 1.

“We wanted to get this budget bill over to the Senate so they can work on it and pass it along to the governor for his signature before the deadline,” Gillen said. “If everyone does their part, we can have a balanced, on-time budget that’s in place before time runs out.”

Gillen said he is committed to working with his colleagues in the House and Senate, along with the governor, to replace school district property taxes.

“We are constitutionally required to adopt a state budget,” Gillen said. “We are morally obligated to continue the fight for property tax elimination until each and every Pennsylvanian owns his or her home.”
