Bike Tour Offers Residents Opportunity for Healthy Exercise While Learning About the Community
8/22/2012
READING – Residents who would like to engage in healthy exercise while also taking in some local sights are encouraged to join Rep. Mark Gillen (R-Berks) on Saturday, Sept. 8, for a bicycle ride beginning at the Brentwood Trailhead along state Route 10 in Reading.

“This is a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, benefit from exercise and learn about our community,” Gillen said. “This is a new addition to some of my more traditional constituent outreach efforts.”

The bike tour will begin at 10 a.m. and the 10-mile, round-trip ride is expected to end at approximately 2 p.m. Riders will travel the Thun Trail and stop at historic points along the way. A boxed lunch will be provided to each participant and riders will stop approximately halfway through the trip at the Allegheny Aqueduct Historical Park and Beidler House for a picnic.

The Beidler House, built in 1783, is a historic treasure in Berks County that is only open on special occasions. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the 18th Century building and its historic relevance to the local community.

Space in the bike tour is limited and registration is required. To register, constituents from the 128th Legislative District should call Gillen’s Reading office at 610-775-5130. All participants must comply with all state laws and sign a legal waiver.

“Health and exercise is a serious concern in our area and across the country,” Gillen said. “My goal in hosting this bike ride is to merge a healthy activity with a learning opportunity. This is a family-friendly activity for residents in Berks County.”

The suggested minimum age for children to participate is 12 years old. All minors under the age of 18 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult. All riders are strongly encouraged to wear a helmet. State law mandates that all children under the age of 12 years old must wear a bike helmet.

If the bike ride needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather, the makeup date will be Saturday, Oct. 6.
